Ok, Hollywood was abuzz about this film and even Diana Ross has shared her two-cents worth coz intrigues had it that Dreamgirls is The Supremes' story. So when i chanced upon it in the in-flight movie channel of Emirates during my flight back home last May, it was my first choice among the 400++ movies you can play, on demand (really cool, Emirates). But then halfway through the film I started wondering why it had so much Oscar nominations this year. Tinodo siguro ang lobbying nila. If not, wala itong aabutin. Ok, Jennifer Hudson is superb for a newcomer. Other than that, nothing is outstanding in this film.
The story is supposed to be inspired by the sex, treachery, struggles and inside wranglings of Diana Ross’ The Supremes. But it came out flat on screen. The screenplay is plain and simply… ahhh… simple. Para ka lang nanonood ng tagalog film. Nothing so Oscariously fantastic about this one.
It’s supposed to be a musical but the music didn’t hit me like what The Chorus Line or the more recent Moulin Rouge did. It doesn’t even compare to Coyote Ugly whose scoring produced some hits enjoyed even up todate (Under the Moonlight, remember?). Sad to say, the best it can do is come up with a sorry version of And I am Telling You (I still prefer the original one which is more powerful and captivating) and the more pathetic vocals of Beyonce’s Listen.
And speaking of Beyonce, she had the role aptly called ‘art imitating life’ as she played the part of a less talented singer whose claim to fame is largely due to her sexiness and the connections it can get to make her way to the top. Eh di ba sa totoong buhay naman, ano ba naman ang kayang niyang kantahin, “to the left, to the left” di ba? She and Jennifer are perfect for the roles, the latter being with the heavy, less desirable physique but with real talent for singing.
The only hot spot in this film is Jamie Foxx who’s always so sexy with a double xx, I can stare at him with much ardor even at boring scenes. And Eddie Murphy? Mas enjoy ko pa syang panoorin (or marinig?) as a pasaway na donkey in Shrek rather than a singing gigolo. Heck, anybody can do this role.
