Hothot: Meryl Streep’s win in Golden Globe. But it’s her portrayal of an eccentric chef in Julia and Julie that gave her fifth (if I’m not mistaken) Golden Globe. Actually natuwa ako sa Golden Globe ngayon. Avatar, which I just reviewed lately at personal favorite ko, won for Best Film. Winner din si Sandra Bullock ng kanyang first acting award for her touching performance in Blind Sind. They do deserve their wins.

eb vs megalomania
Vic has always been the charming and credible host kahit pa may reputasyon sya as a ladies’ man. Joey can be very frank sometimes pero you’ll still admire his wit and humor. Tito, who’s on and off sa program, maybe boring at times pero he lends credibility to the program dahil sa kanyang estado. Somebody's megalomania isn't entertainment for me.
Some of their contests even produced big names sa local entertainment scene (Aiza Seguerra just one example right on top of my head). At sa game shows, the production team really exerts effort to come up with authentic and novel ideas kaya hit sa masa. Hindi yong ginaya na nga lang sa Spin-a-Win pero may 2 at 0 pang numbers in just one slot! Talk about utter carelessness, irresponsibility and arrogance!
Biggest hit ng EB as of now ay ang Pinoy Henyo, a game show na talagang inaabangan ng manonood.
It could easily be a spin-off of the charade game.
Again hoping to invent a new game na maghi-hit sa manonood, they introduced BaBaBoom. A very simple guessing game kung saan hahanapin mo, at iiwasan, ang mga kamay ng mga EB Babes na may coin. Sad to say, hindi ako natutuwa dito. Kulang sa excitement. Kulang sa thrill factor. Maybe because walang challenge sa kaalaman ng viewers. Unlike Pinoy Henyo na lalabas how sharp (or dull) ang isang contestant.
ABC5 adapted the idea (pwede rin from American and British version ng Got Talent), made it into one full program na nag-hit naman sa Pinoys.
Eh di by the time na sawa na ang viewers, tigok agad ang show.
For me, it’s one weak segment ng EB sa ngayon. They should come up with better and fresher idea instead of this one.
Oo nga’t super hit noon ang contest nilang ito, it’s still a recycled material. Nilagyan lang nila ng twist dahil dati, limited to real gays, trannys and cross-dressers yong contest. At dahil open daw to all genders, pwede ang mga lalake. Is it a sign na sa panahong ito, kahit true-blue full-blooded man, ay magdadamit babae para lang kumita ng pera? Sabagay, mahirap talaga ang buhay.
I’m sure EB is just going through a phase. Afterall, no other program has influenced the lives and culture of the masses for the past 30 years. Eat Bulaga lang. The rest? Trying hard losers! Yon lang!

comedy of errors... not
Nong dumating ako ng NAIA last Thursday, I saw some mediamen waiting for somebody at the arrival area. But when I realized that some of the men ay mukhang mga pulis kahit naka-plain clothes, sabi ko ‘ay for sure, hindi ako ang hinahanap nitong mga ito’.
Sabi sa report, he was mistaken for Jason Ivler, yong bumaril sa anak ng isang Malacanang official last November in a road rage.
I particularly remembered the guy dahil nasa parehong section kami nong aircraft. Napansin ko yong bonnet nyang may fire blaze design and I said to myself “ano ba itong si kabayan, hindi naman kalamigan eh nagpapaka-japorms”. Never did I know na kawawa pala ang sinapit ni kabayan.
I just finished watching his interview sa ANC. Doon nya kinuwento ang nangyari sa kanya. The soft spoken, mild manner guy said that all he wanted is to know kung ano ang nangyari at sya ang nadampot at nakulong. A simple apology is what the guy is asking for.
Nobody among the government agencies are owning up to the horrible mistake. Pinapangakuan sya ng trabaho and other stuff. Obviously to appease him.
The wanted criminal would obviously be tisoy dahil anak ng isang foreign diplomat.
His plans destructed, his dreams shattered.
Walang kumikibo. Walang umiimik. Parang stop dance ang labanan. Ang unang pumiyok syang nangitlog. O talagang dedma lang ang mga hinayupak, lalo ang mga nasa Malacanang dahil nobody nobody but you lang naman si Jason?
Wag naman sana. Dahil kung talagang tinuturing nilang Bagong Bayani ang mga OFW, then they just did one of their heroes some great injustice.

not the avatar you know
Before watching it, I thought masyadong bugbog sa hype ang pelikula. Porke ang budget daw nito has reached US$400mn - more than what one blockbuster movie could earn from the tills. Eh paano pa kako sila kikita if that is the case. But we all know by now that James Cameron will be raking in hundreds of millions in profit coz it already breached the US$1bn ticket sales on its 3rd week of run.
The film is set in the year 2154 in Pandora, an earth-like planet somewhere in a far galactic system. Inhabitants of this planet are called Na’vi, mga 10-ft creatures na parang tao din except for their blue skin and feline features sa kanilang mukha at buntot. A mining corporation called RDA wants to kick the Navis out of their homeland dahil may rich deposit of minerals sa kanilang lupa.
But RDA can’t just kick the Na’vis out so they developed Avatars na kamukha ng mga Na’vi to develop a relationship with them and ultimately makumbinsi silang umalis sa kanilang lupa. The Avatar program is headed by Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver). Avatars are controlled by shifting/transporting the minds of the scientists/researchers to the genetically developed Na’vi hybrids.
Ang bidang si Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) was a last minute replacement sa twin brother nyang scientist who was specially trained for the avatar program pero na-murder bago pa makarating sa Pandora. Jake, who was an ex-marine, is now a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair. He was given a bodyguard role dahil hindi naman sya scientist. But it turned out na sya pala ang makaka-penetrate ng community ng mga Na’vi and achieve far more understanding of the tribe than what Dr. Grace Agustine has achieved.
Nagka-developan si Neytiri at si Jake (who’s in his Na’vi body of course) and they fell totally in love. But more than that, naunawaan ni Jake ang pagmamahal at respeto ng mga Na’vi sa nature. Until dumating yong puntong hindi na nya maiwan ang Omaticaya and had to betray his original mission.
Dito na nagdecide si Colonel Miles Quatrich (Stephen Lang), leader of RDA’s security forces na lusubin ang Na’vi at was akin ang kanilang Hometree. A grand battle ensues where high-tech military weaponries are pitted against the bow and arrows and Toruks of the Na’vis.
The Na’vis won and the cruel human exploiters of nature are driven out of Pandora. And Jake? I won’t tell you what happened to him – whether he left with the men or he stayed in Omaticaya. That’s for you to find out.
People may see it as a sci-fi film. It can also be a love story. Pwede ring action. But however you might want to view it, meron itong isang napakahalaga and very timely message – that men and his greed is what destroys the balance of nature.
Bumilib ako ng husto kay James Cameron who wrote the story and directed the film. He was able to create a fantasy world and made me believe in it. With it’s hanging mountains and multi-colored, sometimes luminescent flora and fauna. Bumilib ako dahil nagawa nya akong maki-sympathize sa mga creatures na kulay blue which, otherwise, will be more of characters from a horror movie. And more than that, bumilib ako coz he displayed one technical genius in a sci-fi film na matagal ko nang hindi nakikita since I fell in love with the Star Wars series. Now George Lucas has competition. And a fierce one at that.
And if anybody can do that, it will still be James Cameron when he does the sequel. And he’d better come up with another coherent story para maging kasing commercially and critically successful nito.
As for the actors, Sam Worthington was believable as the free-spirited ex-marine. And Stephen Lang was one mean villain. Ang hindi ko lang nagustuhan, of all the many actresses around, bakit si Sigourney pa ang pinaganap na Dr. Augustine. Her Aliens series is somehow alienating me dahil parang yong character pa rin nya doon ang nakikita ko dito. Sana gumamit na lang ng ibang actress, kahit yong hindi masyadong kilala, to give credence to the character.
It will be interesting come Oscars. I’d bet my bottom riyal na maghahakot ito ng awards. Ang tanong lang, can it equal, much more surpass, Titanic? Para sa akin, it definitely should.

vid on demand - the soong sisters
I’ve seen 1997 Chinese film (produced in HK) called The Soong Sisters, the French film Le Petit Nicolas (The Young Nicholas) and Juno where Ellen Page had a breakthrough performance. All 3 in a 9-hour flight from Doha to Manila kaya wala halos akong tulog sa flight. I didn’t mind. Dahil naenjoy ko ng husto ang mga pelikula na hindi normally nabibili sa mga pirated DVD shops (well, at least the first two).
First day ko naman sa Pinas, hinabol ko talaga ang Avatar dahil baka mawala na sa cinemas. Na mukhang hindi naman agad mangyayari dahil up until now ay pinipilahan pa rin. Ang ganda kasi. But I’ll tell you more about it later.
Let me tell you about The Soong Sisters first.
The story started in the early 1900s nong bata pa ang Soong Sisters Ai-Ling (Michelle Yeoh), Ching-Ling (Maggie Cheung) and May-Ling (Vivian Wu). Dahil mayaman ang pamilya nila, they were sent to study at the Wesleyan University in Georgia. Their father (Charlie Soong) is in the printing business pero supporter ng revolution against the Qing government. He is a very close friend of Sun-Yat Sen who is the leader of the revolution.
The eldest, Ai-Ling married for money. She married H.H. But the second, Ching-Ling fell in love with the already aged Sun Yat-Sen much to the consternation of her father hanggang i-disown pa nga sya.
The youngest, May-Ling married Chiang Kai-Shek who was then a young general of Sun Yat-Sen. Although Kai-Shek is against Communism na sya namang ideology ni Yat-Sen. When Yat-Sen died, Kai-Shek took over power. This is where the clashes between the two sisters occurred dahil Ching-Ling was still a firm believer of her late husband’s ideologies.
But the war against Japan brought them closer again. With May-Ling’s influence, Kai-Shek learned to accept compromise to fight the Japanese with the help of Ching-Ling’s Koumintang Nationalist party. Kaya malaki ang contribution ng tatlong magkakapatid sa history of what is now known as the People’s Republic of China. Sabi nga sa start nong film, one love money (Ai-Ling), one love power (May-Ling) but one loved the country (Ching-Ling).
(Le Petit Nicolas’ review coming right up….)

winter's here again
I really enjoy cold weather wag lang sasamahan ng ulan. Yong tipong malamig lang talaga minus the wind chill factor. It’s sooo comfy snuggling in bed at parang ayaw mo nang umalis doon.
Let’s see if you’re really born to stay in the tropics o pwede ka nang mag-migrate sa north pole!
1. Hindi ka nagdya-jacket kahit malamig kasi:
b. Actually may suot akong tatlong sets ng long john kaya akala nila bigla lang akong tumaba
c. Nag-aalmusal kaya ako ng isang kilong red jalapenos
d. Wala talaga akong pambili ng jacket
2. On winter mornings, eto ang ritwal mo:
a. Naliligo ako kahit malamig noh! May hot water naman
d. Change nationality ako pag winter. Itik ako.
3. You enjoy wearing any of these:
a. Bonnet.
b. Scarf. Feeling New Yorker kasi ako pag naka-scarf
c. Trench coat/leather jacket. Idol ko kaya si Neo
d. Ear mufflers with leopard skin print (change nationality nga ako eh!)
4. Your favorite food/drinks pag malamig ang panahon:
a. Hot chocolate or cappuccino
b. Cup noodles with mainit na sabaw

d. Wala. Yosi lang.
5. For you to keep warm in bed, you:
a. Wear layers and layers of clothes

6. Pag winter, pinakamahirap ang:
a. Paliligo. Nanginginig pati bilbil ko.
b. Exercise particularly jogging, hindi kasi ako papawisan
c. Pagkain.
d. Makipag-chat. Malamig pag masu-show!
7. In general, you enjoy winter kasi:
a. This is the closest thing to being in Europe!
b. Nakaka-get up ako kaya todo porma
c. Hindi ako pinapawisan lalo ang singit ko
d. Ayoko! Pahirap tong rayuma ko!
Please post your answers. Hehehe… wala lang. I just wanted to start the new year on a light note.
